Social Networking is a new technology that allows its users
to communicate with others through messages, comments, videos and more. In Frank
Langfitt’s article “Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting”, Maureen
Crawford-Hentz, the recruiter of Osram Sylvania describes social networking
technology as the best thing to ever happen to the recruiting process. Websites
such as LinkedIn provide users with a new social way of connecting with
employees and employers through messages and the presentation of their personal
information. LinkedIn has been a tremendous social networking tool for those in
the work field being that they are able to narrow down exactly what they are
searching for through specific keywords. This new form of social networking makes
the task of finding employees and work related feedback relatively quick and
easy for users.
Although social networking technology provides us with a
great deal of benefits, it also has its share of negative aspects. The article “Is MySpace Good for Society? A Freakonomics Quorum” by Stephen J. Dubner discusses
the idea that social media sites such as Myspace can be used in harmful ways to
gossip, bully and monger teens online along with increasing procrastination
rates. Danah Boyd, Ph.D. candidate at the School of Information states, “Even
the positive stories that do run often have a negative or sensationalist angle…
unfortunately, those who do not understand social media look to the news, see
the negative coverage, and declare all social media evil.” This new technology
is still relatively new and people are discovering the positive and negative aspects.
